a. What is your educated definition of “communication?”
The study and practice of how people create, share, and interpret messages across various contexts, media, and cultures to foster understanding and connection.
b. What is the value of graduating from an “umbrella” communication department? The value of graduating with an "umbrella" degree like communication is that you better understand the roles and responsibilities of people outside of your specific interests. For example, a communication graduate can understand a marketing person's needs even though their emphasis area is media production. Also, a graduate can take lessons from classes outside of their emphasis area and apply them to a future job.
c. What is the value to society provided by a communication graduate?
A communication graduate can provide society with a well-rounded education and the ability to apply concepts from other areas of study and apply them to their current position. Communication graduates can more easily problem-solve and exercise independent thinking because of their exposure to many different areas within the wider communication field.
d. Why are you a positive representative of PSU’s Department of Communication?
Throughout my time at Pittsburg State University, I have tried to conduct myself in a positive and respectful. I have volunteered time to grow the Esports broadcasting group so that students have more opportunities to work as a broadcaster. And, I continue to spend time working elections in Sedgwick County to support integrity and fairness in our election systems. I tried to give as much or more than I received from my department to help grow the community of communication students.
